Sonya Fatah is an assistant professor at the school of journalism at Ryerson University where she teaches narrative journalism and urban politics and society.

Sonya's research interests focus on live journalism and the form's potential to enhance the application of journalism standards and principles, as well as trust-building for audiences. Along with a colleague, Asmaa Malik she is working on research to map staffing data to measure the state of equity and representation in newsrooms across Canada. 


Most of Sonya’s working life as a journalist was spent overseas in India and Pakistan, covering South Asia for Canadian and U.S. publications. Her documentary on dance, I, Dance was developed during that period and was the product of a grant from the India Foundation for the Arts.
